With around 77 million children enrolled in schools in the United States, this time of year can bring about a lot of change and anxiety. Because of budget cuts, we’re losing teachers, and with un and underemployment rates still casting a bleak cloud over the economy, many families can’t afford to pick up the slack where the schools have fallen behind.

Another graph shows the increasing differences in how children of various races and ethnicities are treated for the same classroom offenses. Are we being too strict?

(more…)The poverty rate for Hispanics has spiked to 26.6% and to 27.4% for African Americans. For Caucasian Americans, the poverty rate in 2010 was 9.9%, which is a half percentage point increase from 2009. A record number of women are living in poverty – more than 17 million with 7.5 million in extreme poverty (an income below half of the federal poverty line)! This is an increase of 14.5% in 2010 as compared to 13.9% in 2009.
