U.S. poverty rates rise to reach 1993 level

The poverty rate for Hispanics has spiked to 26.6% and to 27.4% for African Americans. For Caucasian Americans, the poverty rate in 2010 was 9.9%, which is a half percentage point increase from 2009. A record number of women are living in poverty – more than 17 million with 7.5 million in extreme poverty (an income below half of the federal poverty line)! This is an increase of 14.5% in 2010 as compared to 13.9% in 2009.
